1/2 What Was the First Painting Ever Censored for "Religious Offense"? Censorship in art isn't a modern invention. From the moment artists began asking bold questions, someone out there was already saying: "This one goes too far!" One of the earliest and most iconic examples comes from the 15th century, painted by the Italian artist Masaccio. In the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, he created a fresco called: "The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise"

2/2 Masaccio depicted Adam and Eve completely nude, raw with emotion their faces twisted in shame and pain. For the early 1400s, this was shockingly honest. The Reaction? Years later, church authorities decided the painting was too real, too indecent So they brought in another artist to paint fig leaves over the nudity to make it more “respectable.” Fun Fact: In the 20th century, during a restoration, the fig leaves were removed and Masaccio's original, honest vision was finally revealed again.Great art often walks the line between truth and taboo. If something makes you uncomfortable... maybe it's saying something important.
