Mors Triumphans (c. 1650) by Dutch artist Leonard Bramer (1596-1674).⁣ ⁣ During the 17th century, the danse macabre or "dance of death" motif was widely popular, emerging from Europe's struggles with the Black Plague, religious conflicts, and famine. Artistic representations of death as a skeletal figure or reaper reinforced societal concerns about life’s fragility. Leonard Bramer, influenced by Caravaggio’s dramatic use of chiaroscuro, utilized shadow and contrast to intensify the sense of dread and inevitability in Mors Triumphans. The crowned skeleton represents the indiscriminate nature of death, underscoring the belief that death spares neither king nor commoner
