Elias Howe Jr. was the inventor of the modern sewing machine in 19th century America. He was born on July 9, 1819 in a cultured family in Spencer, Massachusetts and spent his childhood and youth in this state. In 1835, he entered a textile factory in the newly founded city of Lowell, but after the closure of the mentioned factory due to the economic crisis and turmoil of 1837, he went to the city of Cambridge in the same state and worked as a mechanic of spinning machines./farcaster

In 1838, he became a student of the master mechanic, Ari Davis, who specialized in the production and repair of chronometers and precision measuring instruments. It was with Davis that Howe developed the idea for his sewing machine.
