Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Whether you're religious or not, the sight of the 98-foot (30m) sculpture of Christ rising above Rio de Janeiro's magical mountainous landscape with outstretched arms can't fail to stir you. The largest Art Deco statue in the world, this world-famous monument was the brainchild of a priest in the 1850s but it wasn't built until the 1920s. Dedicated in 1931, the concrete Christ has surveyed the city from the top of the forest-clad Corcovado mountain ever since.
