Rollups are only parasitic to ETH when they do the same thing as Ethereum Mainnet. As they become more customized and move away from “Ethereum but cheaper”, they’ll start to be additive. h/t to @raihan for the great conversation today

curious - what do you mean by parasitic? capturing execution that otherwise may have occurred on L1? if so, you are saying that RU specialization will lead to more L1 execution?

The problem is that most chains just don’t do anything special. Sure they might have different backend tech, zkVM, based rollups, different stacks, more smart contract functionality but on the user facing side there’s really not much difference. It’s just annoying for them to switch and bridge to new chains all the time. We should only deploy new rollups and chains if they do something fundamentally different and can be abstracted away enough so that the end user doesn’t have to care about it anymore

Is this just an argument for app Chains?

eth is the base layer of the ecosystem I think with time what mainnet is for and doing is changing from the new user perspective ethereum may become the server back end or rather a network on top of internet you normally never hear about how it's setup exacrly nor interact with it base for example taken usecases like nfts and tokens away from mainnet and other user facing usecases are going to be dominated by base / L2s also whatever ETH can do - a L2 can do better, faster and cheaper but only it can't be as secure which is where ETH should double down

explored this extensively for "community chains" it comes down to the economics of running & maintaining a roll-up ex. outside of BAYC and Pudgy - is there a "playbook" for communities to grow in to their customized rollups?
