Curious to hear takes on Pavel Durov and TG from actual Russians. Personally not a fan of the Russian government but have come to realize how much US media is garbage when it comes to Russia. (Always has been)

Yeah unfortunately once Soviet Union collapsed, US never dissolved the institutions in place to fight against us, partially explains why we are where we are at today. TG is mainstream in Russia, most people I know, in tech and cities love and respect Durov for building something so awesome against the odds twice (VK and tg), few believe or hope Durov and tg is greatest FSB success story in current world of confrontation (i.e designed Lebedev). There is also an awesome movie Mayor Grom where Durov is the main antagonist (highly recommend to watch). Russian libertarians i.e Svetov are all pro tg, they were the ones who organised huge meetings back in 2017 when tg was getting banned in Russia, which I attended. Albeit there is an alternative explanation that ban was staged to create alibi during SEC fillings (Illarionov theory/conspiracy I think). I would say it’s not all white and black, tg is the biggest social network among the progressives, everyone uses channels to obtain information.

Also if I remember correctly they conceptualised and started telegram when they were beginning to face pressure from the government back in 2014 to give up data on protestors and/or introduce moderation, as a tool to safely communicate internally. They ended up selling VK and leaving Russia altogether, also Durov’s libertarianism was at odds with other investors who were just pro doing business, so there was internal conflict I think. That explains why tg is solely owned by Pavel himself to avoid these conflicting interest.
