New research by Northwestern University researchers shows that the warm and humid environment of your shower and toothbrush can provide a suitable place for viruses to grow. These types of viruses do not cause diseases such as colds, flu or even worse diseases. In fact, these viruses, which are called bacteriophages or phages for short, are natural enemies of bacteria. Each tiny phage has evolved to hunt, attack, and engulf a specific species of bacteria. For this research, the researchers collected and studied strips from the surface of 34 toothbrushes and 92 shower heads.
