Hidden in the sands of western Inner Mongolia lie the eerie ruins of Khara Khoto, also known as the “Black City.” Founded in 1032, the city was a bustling trading center along the Silk Road. But toward the end of the 14th century, it mysteriously fell silent, likely due to war or a diverted water source. Buried beneath the sand for centuries, Khara Khoto was rediscovered in the early 20th century, bringing with it a collection of fascinating artifacts: religious texts, artworks, and everyday objects that give us a glimpse into life in this long-vanished city.
