For today's #admired I'm going with Mary Magdalen in Ecstasy (1606) by Caravaggio (oil on canvas). What an image. It's disputed whether or not this is an authentic Caravaggio or one of numerous copies from his followers but regardless I find its power and well...its erotic appeal undeniable.

Bodily she's alone in chamber but on these angel-borne trips "she heard, with her bodily ears, the delightful harmonies of the celestial choirs." This woman is obviously blissed the F out..as one would be and is very likely experiencing some physical...sensations...to accompany it.

It reminds me of the maximumly forceful physical reaction of humans having encounters with angels in the play "Angels in America" (💦 ) which of you think about it not only makes sense but seems inevitable if you were actually to be in the presence of an omnipotent all-loving GOD who brought you to his crib 7x a day.

I'm not a particularly religious person but I find this so compelling. Depicted is Christ's follower Mary Magdalen in the period after his death when she lived out the rest of her life in relative solitude. Apparently she was taken 7x daily by angels into God's presence. We're seeing her in one of those moments.
