One of the animators suggested that Merida's unruly curls from the cartoon "Braveheart" are twisted according to the same principle as a telephone wire-spiral. It was this idea that formed the basis of the heroine's hairstyle. Merida's mop of hair consists of 1,500 individual strands, and Merida herself changes 22 outfits per cartoon and appears five times with a new hairstyle.
