Israel has eliminated a Hezbollah commander blamed for the deaths of hundreds of Americans — CNN Israel struck southern Beirut, Lebanon, killing a high-ranking Hezbollah commander, Ibrahim Aqil. In addition to him, Lebanese authorities said the strike killed 13 people and wounded 66 others. Hezbollah confirmed Akil's death. Last year, the US State Department announced a $7 million reward for information about Aqil, as he was likely behind the 1983 strike on the US embassy in Beirut that killed 63 people. Then Hezbollah, which emerged in 1982, attacked a U.S. Marine barracks located in a building on the Beirut airport grounds. The attack was carried out by detonating a truck bomb. As a result of this attack, 241 US servicemen were killed.
