The first computer virus, known as "Creeper", appeared in the early 1970s. It was created by BBN Technologies employee Robert Thomas for research purposes only. Creeper spread through the ARPANET (the predecessor of the Internet) and left a message on infected computers: “I'm the creeper, catch me if you can!” (“I’m a creeper, catch me if you can!”).
