you don't have to be sorry! ...until your website becomes popular enough and you see the bill

Honestly if my personal site got popular enough for a big bill I think that means I've made it

you'll be surprised how little companies pay for adspace nowadays also for data β€” no one seems to need it if i didn't follow my scrappy instincts and went with vercel's plan to squeeze money out of devs, i'd pay >$10k/month to support all this traffic i don't want to pay when i can get something for free

Agreed, hosting on vercel makes sense until it doesn’t. I’d be very hesitant building something that receives a lot of traffic on vercel, their tier plan is steeep. AWS adds up too but there’s always ways to get credits at least.

aws is like twice as expensive as digital ocean β€” and digital ocean isn't the cheapest option (i just like them too much) and about traffic... you never build something for too little or too much traffic you always build somthing that should blow up or never blow up it's one or the other, never inbetween

I get the sentiment but I typically wouldn’t build a personal site or MVP the same way I’d build a prod app at scale. The only nuance there is if a small-scale app has a simple use case where I’m expecting it going viral or bust. But in my experience there’s usually enough time for a re-build for scale.
