After the development of Whisper (an Ethereum  subprotocol) was abandoned, Status  suffered platform risk consequences. 

Whisper was a GossipSub protocol that used proof of work as its anti-spam mechanism. Gavin Wood had envisioned adaptive routing for Whipser, but it was never implemented...

Status took over Whisper's development and, with Vac, engineered an entirely new GossipSub protocol that could scale to meet Status's needs. 

This was the birth of Waku ✨

This meant Whisper had difficulties scaling to the needs of Status, and they had to reduce the proof of work threshold to run on mobile devices, making spam substantially cheaper for attackers...
