it sounds like the product will exist in perpetuity though? Or did I miss something and there's a suggestion it will get shut down, not just ossify and stagnate?

Not sure but what I'm seeing is that they relinquished the control over contract. 

Also, not sure what to think of this:

The sim swap attacks and the announced then cancelled switch from Base does not look good.
