Gasless usage of DNS names in ENS is imminent! Draft proposal was just posted for anyone curious https://discuss.ens.domains/t/ep5-1-executable-upgrade-dnssec-support/18535 This means that I'll be able to use gregskril.com as my ENS name for free - no protocol fee, no gas, just setting 1 TXT record

What about low gas or even gasless ENS updates? This is the main barrier for me to using my ENS to "host" my blog: I can't afford a few bucks every time (new blog post, typo corrections, CSS changes, etc) I need to update the IPFS hash.

This is technically possible today — .eth name registration/renewal lives on L1 but all your records live on L2 — but there's not a good implementation of it yet We (ENS Labs) are figuring out the best approach and working on a demo. I'll def post it here when the time comes cc @esk3nder
