This year, Greece experienced its warmest winter on record and is on track for its hottest ever summer. Large areas of the country, including the location of this week's blaze, have seen little or no rain for months.

Strong winds, heat and the fact that Athens is surrounded by pine tree forests, makes it extremely hard to put off these fires -which are more or less expected every summer.
