Not true :) They were called "Widgets" and they were incredibly interesting (but ultimately doomed due to web2 biz models). Many SV greats (e.g. Max Levchin, Keith Rabois, Bret Taylor) founded/worked on widget startups. https://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Widgets-add-flair-to-dress-up-Web-sites-2505693.php

Even Google had them. They had a Google Homepage or something like that where you could add widgets.
