I have a funny story about moirés: when I was applying for art university in 1997, I had created a series with „interactive“ analogue moirés printed on transparent plastic that could be moved against each other. When presenting the idea, the committee of professors said it was the biggest shit they’ve ever seen

oh sheesh. i'm not going to tell my 'iconic' story in public but its kinda amazing how many of 'those suppose to know' professors are dead inside & can't read or see anymore & kinda just act like awful human beings.

They were super arrogant, but tbh, I was the same at that time, knowing very little, but I believe the taste and energy was there 😆

i will agree its a delicate balance. one of my favorite phrases became "missed the forest for the trees" after I took a very detailed paper back to a 70 yr old rousseau professor on rousseau & did my best to politely insist he reread. that's how he apologized to me & he paid much closer attention after to my writing.
