James Alan Hetfield is an American rock musician; the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the metal band Metallica. Since 2011, he has been ranked 87th in the list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. A distinctive feature of his playing style is the predominance of downstrokes, even in the fastest passages, and his use of a three-finger grip on the pick (plectrum).
