When I thought it was over, it had just gotten started. The first time I used public transportation in New York with my wheelchair, fear hit me like a brick. Rolling up the bus ramp was a struggle—my chair kept bouncing and getting stuck. Inside, the driver cleared the wheelchair space and waited as I tried to turn 180 degrees in a narrow space. The subway was no easier, with a crowded platform and a huge gap to cross. But I didn’t give up. Fear didn’t stop me - it pushed me. Each attempt got smoother as I learned to adjust, position myself, and speak up. The takeaway? Fear isn’t a wall - it’s a doorway. Step through it, and you’ll find strength you didn’t know you had.
