These days are long. I’m a medical student, third year, on my last rotation: surgery. I’m typically here from 5 AM to 5 PM (if not a longer day). I respect more and more what surgeons do every day. However, it’s sometimes hard to stomach some of the worst symptoms of a broken medical training system.

Should medical students wake patients up before rounding with the resident team? Is this a high value practice at the expense of a patient’s sleep? I think it’s hard to answer, especially without providing more context, details, and understanding of this unique role.
