In Bitcoin, when you make a transaction, it gets put in a waiting area called the memory pool. Miners compete to solve a puzzle involving the transaction, and the first one to solve it adds the transaction to a block. This block is then confirmed by other miners, usually taking about an hour.

Generating random hashes until a specific value is found is the "proof-of-work" you hear so much about—it "proves" the miner did the work. The amount of work it takes to validate the hash is why the Bitcoin network consumes so much computational power and energy.

And what is Blockchain? Imagine a blockchain as a digital notebook that many people share. Instead of one person keeping the notebook, everyone has a copy. Whenever someone adds new information (like a transaction), it gets written down in the notebook. Once it's written, it can't be changed or erased.
