Last night, I played Dark Souls again, and it reminded me of how FromSoftware has crafted so many heart wrenching stories. The tale of Sif and Artorias stands out the most. Artorias, known as the Abysswalker, was a noble knight who fought valiantly against the Abyss. His loyal companion, Sif, a great grey wolf, stayed by his side through it all. When Artorias was consumed by the Abyss, he used his Greatshield to protect Sif, who now guards his grave and the Covenant of Artorias ring.
The music during the battle with Sif and the wolf’s reluctance to fight the player is deeply moving. Sif’s only goal is to prevent the player from suffering the same fate as Artorias. The tragedy of Artorias and Sif is unique in its innocence and emotional depth.
