Joe Louis One of the most famous heavyweight champions of the world, Joe Louis, still holds the record for the longest tenure of this title (11 years, 8 months and 7 days) and the number of defenses — 25. Louis gained national love in the United States by defeating Max Schmeling in a rematch in 1938. It took place two years after the first fight, in which Luis suffered the first defeat of his career. As The Ring magazine notes, before the first fight for the world title in 1937, Louis defeated ten and lost to only one boxer from the top 10 of The Ring in the heavyweight division, and of the 25 title defenses, he spent 17 against boxers from the top 10, 7 of them against the first number of the rating. Louis retired from boxing in 1949 with the rank of world champion, but returned to the ring in 1952 due to debts to the tax service, which haunted him for a long time. Louis earned about $4.6 million in the ring, but the boxer got about 800 thousand of them.

There is even a joke about Pep once winning a round without throwing a single punch, which speaks to how difficult it was for opponents to hit him. In 1947, Pep was seriously injured in a plane crash, but six months later he returned to the ring and continued to win. Pep's first winning streak in the ring consisted of 63 fights, and then after his first defeat, he won 72 more victories before losing to another outstanding boxer, Sandy Saddler. Saddler was perhaps Pep's only worthy opponent, winning three out of four fights. Looking at Pep's track record, it is worth noting that back then, boxers entered the ring much more often, even as world champions, and not all of their fights were title fights.

He was forced to flee both countries and live and box in Europe and South America to avoid going to prison. He went from lightweight to heavyweight and continued to box and even win, despite being blind in one eye and starting to go blind in the other. He did not get the opportunity to box for the heavyweight title, as another boxer from this list, Jack Johnson, refused to give him a chance. And I faced difficulties in getting title fights because of the color of my skin. His retirement from boxing due to blindness went unnoticed, and it was only in 1944 that his boxing career became known to the general public through the efforts of journalist Al Laney.
