The Man Who "Survived" a Railroad Spike: Phineas Gage (1848) While working on a railroad in Vermont, Phineas Gage had a 1-meter iron rod blasted through his skull — and lived. Though he survived, his personality completely changed, making his case one of the first to link brain injury with behavior. Fun fact: Gage's skull and the rod are still preserved at Harvard Medical School, where they’re studied to this day.
