No one reaches out to you for compassion or empathy so you can teach them how to behave better. They reach out to us because they believe in our capacity to know our darkness well enough to sit in the dark with them. - Brene Brown We should strive to be able to relate to others with both compassion and empathy. Being capable of showing these traits can be enough to be there for someone, even if you don't have the tools or experience to fix their problem. We can support others and be at their level while not fixing. For many, someone just listening and being present is all that matters.
