Uta von Ballenstedt: the most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages. Uta von Ballenstedt was born at the end of the 10th century, the daughter of Count Adalbert of Ballenstedt and his wife Hidda. It belonged to the House of Ascania, whose lands stretched across what we now know as Saxony and Brandenburg. Uta married Ekkehard II of Messen, a nobleman at the court of Henry III, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Although the couple had no children, when they died, they left their estates to Henry III. Part of their wealth was donated to Naumburg Cathedral for the construction of a chapel, and Uta and Ekkehard were recognized as two of the twelve founders of the cathedral. In the 13th century, 12 life-size portraits were placed in the cathedral in honor of these nobles. Uta's beauty was captured in limestone, and her figure is considered a masterpiece of medieval art, comparable to Queen Nefertiti and Botticelli's Venus.
Disney used her face, crown and cape to create two characters 1 reply
