Maybe hot take, but I really don't see the point of having ~10 shades per color in a design system. Do we need more than foreground/background/hover variants for every single color? I can see the case for more grays, maybe. Curious what y'all think.

I hope no one is arguing with you. I think even 2 shades of the same color would make ADA compliance a headache for anyone downstream working on implementation

Nah, no one is arguing but IMO a lot of the popular component libraries and even stuff like Tailwind suggest having tons of variants (e.g. the popular 50 - 900 pattern). I've noticed a lot of open source design systems follow this pattern too. About to start a new design system at work and I think we're gonna KISS.
