Vitalik sums it up beautifully in this screenshot - it's been the lack of regulation clarity with serious projects that has stunted growth for builders to come and embrace the tech. People not actively building in the ecosystem are probably forming their perception of crypto through cringe headlines of Moodeng and Bonk millionaires. Not exactly the best sell to convince a talented engineer at Anthropic to work with crypto right?
