funny. Thought we needed to "abstract all the L2's" away badly so that no one needs to care or know where their funds are... and yet this shows even traditional finance is not there yet.

there are 3 main categories:
credit/debit cards - you’re most likely familiar with this one

electronic payment - the equivalent of transport cards with credit (eg. Oysters in London). Usually local companies who control the entire infra

QR payment - the likes of WeChat in China, usually app-focused international companies

there’s a certain level of absurd and a “payment method fatigue” in .jp 

liquidity is fragmanted across many services

what does blockchain actually solve which some of the current qr code driven systems don’t? realistically though, when buying groceries, no fundamental philosophy.

which is why I mentioned “when buying groceries”, as a sign of mundane, day to day activities, for low sums.

if the form factor of the POS can be iterated, then Visa already won. 

although there’s more to it: the qr code apps have a ton of deals and partnerships in .jp, like Amex deals on steroids

I think the real question is, which system you would rather store your liquidity on in the long run – the legacy, permissioned nation-state backed one, or the more open, permissionless composable privacy-friendly one?

The form factor of the point-of-sale system can always be iterated on at the wallet / app level. It will take time to get good, but I think the industry will get there soon enough.
