Researching Hilma af Klint and the origins of abstract art.

This work is from 1907, i.e. 4 years before Kandinsky’s Composition V, which for a long time was thought by many (including Kandinsky himself) to have been the first abstract painting.

I wish she could see us loving her art now, although I don’t think it would make a difference. She knew, ya know?

Klint specified in her will that her paintings should be kept secret for at least 20 years after her death. When boxes containing more than 1200 works were finally opened in the late 1960s, her extraordinary oeuvre led to a reevaluation of the origins of abstract art.
