I’m obviously terrible at this. I’ve maxed out around 10 of these beasts and none of them can defeat a gym leader. 

Am I just terrible at building comps? Should I poison the local water supply? How do I win?!

Put all points into defense and some into stamina. Don’t bother with attack/speed. Better if the creature starts with a high defense rating. At some point you will get lucky and manage a few strong counters against the boss and win.

I feel your pain. So I've noticed after shopping around here n there..some creatures started off with a better Stat-Spread. I initially figured that each would start at lvl 1 with the same stats and we as their owners would disperse points as they leveled up...simply isn't the case though.

Makes the game more interesting forsure
