Warpcast has +300 endpoints I would say is larger than the farcaster protocol by far. This response with hubs being open-source is a gimmick, Warpcast just built a backend that acts like an extension of the protocol that's not open-source, and like you say they claim this ecosystem is decentralized. 

Open-sourcing Warpcast is a minimum bar for having trust, the reticence of doing that for me looks like malfeasance.

It's clear to me that the Merkel team and Dan want to keep significant control over everything Warpcast/Faracaster related, and if that's true I don't know why they even bother with decentralization if it's just marketing.
