NETWORK STATES

The most common objection I hear around Network States is "what about states with bigger guns?"

A proper Network State is immune to guns in the same way Bitcoin is, but this can be abstract to grok.

DEFINITIONS

A "Nation" is typically derived from genetics, birthright, geography, which sometimes is aligned on beliefs or values but not always.

A "State" is defined in international law as:

1. Permanent population
2. Defined territory
3. Government
4. Capacity to enter relations with other states

WHAT IS A NETWORK STATE

If we take the spirit of the above definitions, I propose a new definition for "Network State"

1. Digital-first Population (Network over Nation)
2. Defined (Digital) Resources
3. Governance
4. Diplomatic Representation

Instead of territories, a Network State owns or coordinates resources, specifically digital resources which are difficult to confiscate physically.

While a Network State may own land for citizens globally, the land is not value and thus if invaded, little is gained or lost.

While having land is great, its ultimately not about the land, and thus the option to exit the land while maintaining important resources creates little incentive to invade.

The digital first population is globally distributed and very values aligned.

Citizen curation and patriotism will differentiate this from an open community.

The global distribution of members creates lower friction to cross border mobility.
