America seems to go from swings of religious fervor to hard secularism every 100 years or so:
Late 1600s - Puritans, religious hysteria, witch trials
Late 1700s - Founding fathers, enlightenment deism, "separation of church and state"
Late 1800s - Great awakenings, Methodist and Baptist movements, abolition, temperance movements
Late 1900s - "End of history" neoliberalism, counter-culture, second wave feminism, atheism 0 reply
