Happy Halloween! Why not read some creepy stories tonight? 👁️ I have a new one that was just published in "The Witch House" volume 4 (titled "Open the Door") alongside a roster of delightfully unsettling stories. Check it out (it's probably the finest thing I've written yet): https://witchhousemag.blogspot.com/2024/10/witch-house-4-now-available.html

I found this line the most intriguing in the entire story: "I look at Dylan's mouth--at the downturned shape that makes him look like he is always frowning--and see his father, and I know that I can never leave this house." I wonder if the narrator is holding something back? This was a chilling read. Well done.

Mark, I really appreciate you reading the story! Glad you found it chilling! Yes, that line came to me much later in revision. I think I needed to understand why she would stay in that house and not just move. Then she spoke those words to me, and I realized there's a lot of pain in her past. This story was an "out of the frying pan into the fire" moment for her.

It's a wonderful feeling to be a witness to the inner lives of characters. Your "short" story read like a funnel to a much longer tunnel!
