The French-Italian research station Concordia in Antarctica, the coldest place on Earth (mean annual temperature of −54.5°C), has just recorded an unprecedented heatwave of 50°C above average, caused by warm winds from Australia. This was the most extreme deviation from the mean ever recorded anywhere on Earth
