@jeffexcell and I had a little debate about why the government shouldn't be giving away money it stole from taxpayers in foreign aid. He thinks that USAID should continue to exist because it is saving lives by doing things like handing out free HIV drugs to people in need. I certainly understand why he would think this but I don't agree. Although apparently the HIV/AIDS programs are going to continue, even if they weren't I would argue that they are not a justification for the continued existence of USAID. USAID has brilliant branding, how could anyone be against feeding the hungry and handing out medicine? The facts are quite different, USAID is a organization well known for corruption, interfering in foreign affairs, manipulating elections, feeding terrorists, and spreading propaganda, and its all paid for by the US taxpayer. Do they do some good along the way? Sure. Does that mean they should continue to exist? No. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/marco-rubio-foreign-aid-future-trump-administration/

This brings up an interesting moral argument, is it okay for a corrupt organization to continue to hurt people if that same organization is also helping people? No I don't think so. The entire government is a criminal organization and USAID is just another part of that. I would say that arguing USAID should continue to exist despite it's corruption is similar to arguing that a violent gang should be allowed to continue to harm people because it donated money to help kids with cancer. Charity is very common among organized crime to build goodwill with the community, and the government is just another gang hiding under a democratic cloak of legitimacy. I will also point out nothing was preventing any of the people and organizations, some of whom are quite wealthy, who were outraged about USAID shutting down from stepping up and paying for those meds themselves. It's amazing what people can accomplish without any help from government if they want to.
