We've asked readers if they like long tweets from a UX standpoint and most people prefer to read a longer post in a browser / link vs. in feed.

personally i don't care one way or the other but try it for a little bit, see what happens.

I believe the optionality is always better for users. Maybe they are just very ruthlessly prioritising on the dev end.

maybe so - seems like an easy lift though although i know nothing about it
