Today I was wondering how Satoshi concealed their IP when bootstrapping the Bitcoin network in January 2009, since they’d have had to run at least one bootnode and broadcast it to new peers.

I then found this Stack Exchange answer. Hal Finney once published a log of his own node connecting to the only other node available then (presumably Satoshi’s).

The IP in question belonged to a Californian residential ISP named Covad (later absorbed by Megapath), which seems to rule out a data center VPN endpoint.
