I wrote a client newsletter on Deepseek today. Irony with Chinese characteristics drips off this initiative - its brand is the old Twitter blue and its whale icon looks like an awkward Twitter bird copy, and the open source license of this Chinese endeavour is the MIT Open Source License. You can ask the app about the 47th American President inaugurated on the day of the R1 release but you can’t ask for an opinion about Winnie the Pooh. You can also ask about the mathematics of squares but you can’t ask about events in Tiananmen Square. And DeepSeek is owned by a hedge fund started by Liang Wenfeng and while I know nothing, I know an opportunity when I see one. Shorts on NVIDIA by the investors in DeepSeek wouldn’t surprise me and in fact not having shorts would be counter intuitive for a hedge fund. It all feels like it's a perfectly orchestrated X (formerly known as Twitter, and #103 on my app store popularity list) meme campaign to me.
