Ireland's Data Protection Commission has fined TikTok for allegedly transferring European users' data to China, in violation of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation.
The DPC is the privacy regulator in the European Economic Area (EEA), which includes the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. The DPC said on May 2 that TikTok violated GDPR by failing to "verify, ensure, and justify" the data it sent to China. The commission has ordered TikTok to comply with the processing within six months or it will suspend the transfer of data to China.
TikTok disagrees with the DPC's decision and plans to appeal. Christine Grahn, TikTok's head of public policy and government relations in Europe, said on May 2 that the decision did not take into account Project Clover, a €12 billion initiative to protect European user data. TikTok has never received a request for European user data from the Chinese government, nor has it ever been handed over to them, Grahn said. 0 reply
