My favourite pastime in Ukraine is mushroom hunting. I’m still learning which ones are safe vs poisonous, but I’m enjoying the experience. I’ll be back in the Carpathians this summer. I took this selfie on September 17, 2022.

If you pass through San Francisco, we can aim to get out and forage: mushrooms and seaweed. If timing is right, we can join a class: https://www.foragesf.com/homepage-classes

I am an avid mushroom forager. We as westerners are mycophobic in general, (easier to teach kids they’re all bad.) In reality what we can find falls into buckets of 20% edible, 10% delicious, 40% meh, 29.99% cause gastro distress (nausea, rapid departure,) and 0.01% deadly. The deadly ones are rare, obvious, and don’t look particularly appealing. There are tricks to spot them e.g. Google mushroom “skirt.” Russula for example is really acrid, like a spicy bitter radish potato. But Babushkas can show you how to soak and brine them to make them taste great.
