Is it that much superior to VSCode? I do just a tiny bit of Python, on the order of magnitude of hundreds of lines only (really just some Manim code for science communication animations). My main research code is in R (and nothing beats Rstudio for that).

Well, PyCharm is designed for Python, so it has many useful Python-specific features already built in (like easily creating a venv). Try it out 🙂 They have a free version (Community Edition) available.
