Why would old men not plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit? Is it simply not wanting others to have what they themselves cannot? Or perhaps there's not enough reliable trust in society to assure that the tree will remain there for any amount of time? Long term investment can't happen under volatile and low quality trust conditions.

envy and greed. Last week in Spain we had a total blackout, and people got crazy going to the super markets and hardware stores to buy flashlights and camping gas. Guess what? People instead of buying one for their use, they wanted to buy 6 or 10 of them, even though there were already big queues from people waiting to get one of those. It is sad, and I think COVID made a lot of people more selfish.

Is that envy and greed, or is it low quality trust and volatility? Were people just buying them so they could scalp them outside for a higher price? Or were they buying them because they didn't trust the supply chain (and each other!) to have more supply later if they needed it?
