So as someone who’s been building for almost two years on Lens and who has recently joined Farcaster I can give you my pov. Lens is similar to Farcaster with one major difference. While Farcaster relies on its "sufficiently decentralized open graph" lens is building its core protocol on smart contracts (onchain)

This Leads two very different types of protocols. Farcaster has really perfected UX due to its more offchain approach and building out their own client. Lens has decided to let other builders build clients while focusing mostly on giving them as much control as possible while doing so.

From my perspective as a builder I see Farcaster atm more as a social network whereas lens is mostly gearing towards social media. Farcaster (Micro-blogging, bounties, jobs/work=> communities) Lens (Music Apps, photo apps, streaming, blogs=> creators) Lens takes a more DIY approach FC makes it easier to integrate.

what are good Lens apps? do I have to pay for every thing I do on Lens if the entire thing is onchain?

So Lens is fully gasless (sponsored by the protocol and apps) for most major apps. Atm I can only really recommend Buttrfly mobile client mixed with Interface Hey with the most custom features (Open Actions, Livestreams, Mint on Zora from feed) However Imo the coolest ones are more novel ideas (music apps, betting)
