What are your favorite live cover performances/artists? For me, Annie Clark, who has a long back catalog of very ambitious covers. She now gets called up for halls of fame and awards show tributes (Nirvana, Kate Bush, Prince), but there are some amazing deep cuts from her early career. You can see her get a little nervous in the really big ones, which I find very relatable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TuWsQ1smQo

gonna be a me-monster (sorry) but quick story time about covers: in my first week at morgan stanley, they invite me to an exclusive, confidential event with the firm’s top family office clients. i had no details except to show up, make a great impression, and make everyone feel at home (also to look good, lol it was morgan stanley after all). i was nervous. i was still learning the firm, the advisors, and whatever the hell a “great impression” could mean. showed up to the address, cocktails outside, yapped and smiled. then we went inside. it was a bespoke, curated singer/songwriter night (think bluebird cafe) with the songwriters behind hits from madonna, tina turner, keith urban, britney, miley, pat benetar, aerosmith, the list goes on. what a wild experience to hear “covers” of songs as they were originally conceived, interspersed with stories of how the mainstream editions came to be. that experience has altered my understanding and perception of “covers” ever since.
