kicks it off with some spice: “that quote about second marriages is true of soft landings: it represents the triumph of hope over experience”

says soft landing is still very much at risk; people who say inflation is under control don’t know what they are talking about.

jcal: is the fed acting independently like they should?

larry: i’m just a spectator and ill let others speculate. it’s not just people in political situations that, when they think they have a genius idea, take a long time to realize it wasn’t. it even happens to my friend Chamath… have you heard about SPACs??

larry: I do worry a lot about regulation. But the large reason why police are good isn’t because they arrest a burglar; its because when cops are around, much less crime occurs. To evaluate cops just on instances of crime is wrong — and the same is true with regulation. We need frameworks for freedom to flourish.

larry: i think the most important theme in America is resiliency, the undeniable path to our self-actualizing prophecies. i would want to be dealt the US hand more than a hand of any other country, every time.

larry (on education): it is a tragedy in our education system that we used to teach that achievements led to self-esteem, and now we teach that self-esteem leads to achievement. it is absurd that the average GPA at Harvard is above 3.7.

larry (on the US): do i think the challenges we are facing are more solvable and that we are more dynamic in our ability to solve them? absolutely. we are still the place where every person wants to come to.

chamath: if you were jpow, what would you do?

larry: i thought he was so off course two years ago, but a year ago he realized that inflation is the principle problem and he needs to focus on getting that back to target. differences in actions would be small, tactical not large, macro.
