bob: “the universe chose fusion — 200 million times more energy per mass used than any chemical reaction”

*me wondering if I heard the 200 million number right*

david (helion!!!): originally interested in anti-matter and fusion but was discouraged because i was convinced none of the machines would be ready for me to turn on until well after my retirement — until I met bob and learned how their approach skips steps that will get them to market much faster than I ever imagined

side note, bob and david are each giving short presentations then both going into panel discussion with besties all together.

from a conference perspective, this is brilliant because most in the audience don’t have enough baseline knowledge about fusion to keep up with a candid conversation — but now they will.

david: we’ve built six machines, achieved 100 million degrees Celsius (INSANE) and did it all at 95% efficiency — first company to do that. their first customer is Microsoft, aiming to come online in 2028. 50 megawatts, which could power 40k homes.

friedberg: who is going to win between the two of you?

bob: only one company isn’t going to win when we’re addressing a major market like energy where $1 out of every $12 is spent on us. it won’t come down to our different architecture approaches; it’ll come down to warming temperature limitations.

jcal: do we need to be sweating global warming crisis if you guys have the solution to bring to market soon?

bob: i mean until then you’re still pumping a lot of carbon into the atmosphere, and then we will need better carbon capture solutions.

david: long term optimistic, but a long way to get to carbon-free power

chamath: the problem requires so much capex that at some point the funding will transition from VCs (technical) to sovereign wealth funds (nontechnical), who then have heavy influence over who may win. what would you say in that room?

david: yes efficiency

interesting conversation on public acceptance of fusion and both highlight the importance of BUILDING IN PUBLIC in order to build transparency, share the real risks, and gain public trust. trying to avoid the same mistakes the nuclear industry made in rolling out a new tech.

bob: “once you make one of these things, you simply manufacture it for speed and scale. it looks like an automotive factory, and in fact many people who come to work for us do come from automotive factories.” didn’t know that!!

predicts early 2026 will be the first time power out > power in
